Stone and Dust, 2017 - 2018.

Contemporary Art Centre, La halle des bouchers, Vienne, France

The exhibition reflects on the processes of sedimentation involved with the notions of memory, transformation and history. From the encounter with the Church of Saint André le Haut in the city of Vienne, and the archaeological studies carried out on the site since 1999, the art works partially reconstruct the various stages through which the place has passed during its history.A recognition of this is made from the physical and testimonial traces that serve to reconstruct and think of this space as a place that has been used and inhabited in different ways

The photographs of the series Stone and Dust underline the materiality of the place and the consideration of the past. Also how time and death are conditions inherent to mem- ory and existence. Some images such as Temple, Nave and Window speak from the material culture perspective and its close link with the uses and conceptions of space. Images like Bird or Skeleton remind us of the inexorable passage of time and the transitory condition of life

The video installation Swirling Chronologies reflects on the processes of sedimentation involved in notions of memory, transformation, and history. Stemming from an encounter with the Church of Saint André le Haut in the city of Vienne and from the archaeological studies carried out at the site since 1999, the work explores and acknowledges the building by valuing the physical and testimonial traces that help reconstruct and reimagine this space as one that has been used and inhabited in various ways.

Jaqueline’s account, who lived in the building for several decades, serves to conceive and reflect on how a religious site was transformed and experienced as a place of residence. In this way, the piece highlights how the history of places is deeply intertwined with the history of the people who passed through them.

The installation Crossed Lines developed from multiple visits to the space of Saint André le Haut and from the archaeo- logical research carried on for almost 20 years on the site. The work methodically rebuilds the diverse buildings that have existed in the place in order to show light to the dif- ferent conceptions of the space and it’s transformation. The work not only responds to specific contextual situations but underline the fact that historical processes partially oscillate between the search for spiritual needs and quotidian answers to daily existence.
